We get a lot of inquiries from potential customers who want advice about how to span a long distance with a wireless connection:

If there is NOT direct line of sight:

Our position is that the professional way for us to respond to such inquiries is to be perfectly frank and tell you that we cannot make such projections as an objective statement:

  • There is going to be some experimentation involved. The customer is going to have to assume some risk. If there is not direct line-of-sight, a distance of more than 100 meters may be a difficult task – depending on the nature of the obstacles.
  • You may have to “create” line of sight by placement of an antenna, or in extreme cases, with a repeater (which few people will go to the trouble and expense to do – unless the link is *very* important or the only option).

If there is direct line of sight:

If there is direct line-of-sight, it’s not going to be difficult – we can recommend equipment that will bridge that distance.

  • In 95% of cases, there will be buildings, trees, interference from other radio systems or networks, or a hill – and in such cases, it’s going to be difficult
    • It’s going to be an experiment
    • Keep in mind that when you ask us for an opinion, there is no way for us to “see” the situation and/or know all the details – therefore we cannot guarantee.
  • If there is a hill in the way, the only way to make the link is with a two (or three) link system involving repeaters.

NOTE:

We feel that a professional approach is to not make distance “guarantees” and not to make firm statements about long-distance specifications in situations that do not involve line-of-site. The customer must bear some risk that if doesn’t work out, a re-stocking fee (5%) is going to apply and there will be no refund of shipping costs. The following is an extreme example, but useful for illustrative purposes: One of our customers–a technical consultant–attempted to install a wireless (WiFi) network in a hospital. The entire project failed -because there is so much RF (radio frequency) equipment in a typical hospital that it interfered with the WiFi equipment – and all equipment was uninstalled. This was in 2004, and the prevalent WiFi technology at that time was 802.11b. We have never encountered any other situation that was this extreme, but there are cases in which RF interference from a police or fire station, or hospital, reduces the range of wireless network connections in the neighborhood.

PHYSICAL SEPARATION of the R36 and the wifi adapter:  They should be physically separated to prevent transmitter noise from one degrading the receiver sensitivity in the other.  The last installation put the antenna and wifi adapter outdoors on a pole and the R36 inside a steel-walled trailer. Best results ever!

Maximum outside operating temperature of the Alfa WiFi USB adapters is 104 temperatures and they will fail if exposed to  temperatures higher than 104.

To date I’ve made two installations of Alfa R36 wifi router/repeaters- one sold and one my own. In one case the high gain antenna is at the top of the pole while the R36 is at the bottom of the pole to concentrate its radiation into the house. In my own case the R36 is just below the high gain antenna and can be received by my laptop 200 to 500 feet away, This email is being sent through my own “wifi hotspot”. Photos attached.

12-volt power to the R36 is extended via 18-gauge zip cord spliced into the R36 power supply wire.

The wifi adapter is in the high gain antenna.  This makes the high gain antenna available for use with tablets and newer computer operating systems.

My own R36 installation, with the R36 just below the antenna outdoors on the pole has led to the wifi adapter dying. Symptoms were very low signal strength and very low connection speed. Replacing the CUR wifi adapter and putting the R36 ten feet away from it solved that problem.

ANSWER:  AWUS036H is the best for Linux out-of-the-box, best range, best for war-driving etc.

Alfa R36 802.11 b, g N, Repeater and Range Extender for AWUS036H can also be used as a 3G Router:  Enables you to repeat a WiFi connection to the internet:  The origin signal is connected to by the AWUS036H; the AWUS036H connects to the R36 by USB cable, and the R36  redistributes the internet connection to multiple Users (Desktops, Laptops, tablets, iPad)

Setup Instructions:

We recommend that you have the latest firmware installed.

You don’t have to install anything onto your laptop.

For best results, physically separate the R36 and the Alfa USB WiFi adapter as far and as physically isolated as is practical

To setup to repeat a signal from a neighboring Access Point:

  1. Use the USB cable to connect the awus036h to the r36
  2. Establish a connection to the R36 either by WiFi or by plugging ethernet cable into LAN port of R36 and ethernet port of PC
  3. Type in browser address bar: 192.168.2.1 (this is the default IP address of the R36)
  4. Click “easy setup”
  5. Click “usb wireless adapter”
  6. Click “site survey”
  7. Click “rescan”
  8. Click on the “ssid” signal you want.
  9. Click “select”
  10. Click “next”
  11. Click “done” or you can click the “ssid choice” box, and rename it, and click “done.”  At this point you are finished with the installation.
  12. Security can be added at anytime by clicking on “advanced” and then clicking on “security.”  Adding security is almost identical on basically any brand of router.
  • The R36 works fine with the Alfa AWUS036H but it also works fine with other wifi adapters that use the Realtek RTL8187L chipset. This offers 802.11b/g (11 and 54 megabit) service but not 802.11n (150 megabit).
  • Bookmark the IP address of the R36 (192.168.2.1) so you don’t have to keep remembering it.
  • When using the wifi connection to set up the R36, if you change the channel or the SSID (the name of the signal) of the R36 the change will take effect, but then your computer’s wifi will disconnect from the signal (because the ‘old’ signal is no longer there) and you will need to search for the ‘new’ R36 signal and reconnect and log in to the R36 before proceeding further!
  • R36 BOOT-UP TAKES ONE MINUTE.  Do not have a magnet near the R36 when you are trying to set it up.

Sample application for connecting to an access point up to 3 miles away:

  • High-gain outdoor antenna and close-mounted wifi adapter in a weatherproof housing.
  • That antenna mounted wifi adapter connects with a USB cable to the R36 mounted in a weatherproof housing lower down on the pole.
  • The R36 is a local access point that wirelessly repeats the desired signal to the house. In this way any wifi-enabled computer or tablet using any operating system can take advantage of the outdoor high-gain antenna. And, no software (driver or utility) need be installed on your computer or tablet.
