Customer Alex Crow wrote:  I bought this product with the assurance of another user of this usb adapter stated on backtrackforums that the chipset supported monitor mode. Furthermore, I was surprised that it was not only a plug and play adapter in a Linux 64 bit OS environment and that the driver was native and needed not be manually installed or compiled from source on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Awesome range and compatibly!!! I will be recommending this adapter to many friends ty

QUESTION: Which of these wifi cards would have the best support out of the box on Linux? and the best range? War driving etc:  AWUS036H or AWUS036NH or AWUS036NHA

ANSWER:  AWUS036H is the best for Linux out-of-the-box, best range, best for war-driving etc.

Alfa R36 802.11 b, g N, Repeater and Range Extender for AWUS036H can also be used as a 3G Router:  Enables you to repeat a WiFi connection to the internet:  The origin signal is connected to by the AWUS036H; the AWUS036H connects to the R36 by USB cable, and the R36  redistributes the internet connection to multiple Users (Desktops, Laptops, tablets, iPad)

Setup Instructions:

We recommend that you have the latest firmware installed.

You don’t have to install anything onto your laptop.

For best results, physically separate the R36 and the Alfa USB WiFi adapter as far and as physically isolated as is practical

To setup to repeat a signal from a neighboring Access Point:

  1. Use the USB cable to connect the awus036h to the r36
  2. Establish a connection to the R36 either by WiFi or by plugging ethernet cable into LAN port of R36 and ethernet port of PC
  3. Type in browser address bar: 192.168.2.1 (this is the default IP address of the R36)
  4. Click “easy setup”
  5. Click “usb wireless adapter”
  6. Click “site survey”
  7. Click “rescan”
  8. Click on the “ssid” signal you want.
  9. Click “select”
  10. Click “next”
  11. Click “done” or you can click the “ssid choice” box, and rename it, and click “done.”  At this point you are finished with the installation.
  12. Security can be added at anytime by clicking on “advanced” and then clicking on “security.”  Adding security is almost identical on basically any brand of router.
  • The R36 works fine with the Alfa AWUS036H but it also works fine with other wifi adapters that use the Realtek RTL8187L chipset. This offers 802.11b/g (11 and 54 megabit) service but not 802.11n (150 megabit).
  • Bookmark the IP address of the R36 (192.168.2.1) so you don’t have to keep remembering it.
  • When using the wifi connection to set up the R36, if you change the channel or the SSID (the name of the signal) of the R36 the change will take effect, but then your computer’s wifi will disconnect from the signal (because the ‘old’ signal is no longer there) and you will need to search for the ‘new’ R36 signal and reconnect and log in to the R36 before proceeding further!
  • R36 BOOT-UP TAKES ONE MINUTE.  Do not have a magnet near the R36 when you are trying to set it up.

Sample application for connecting to an access point up to 3 miles away:

  • High-gain outdoor antenna and close-mounted wifi adapter in a weatherproof housing.
  • That antenna mounted wifi adapter connects with a USB cable to the R36 mounted in a weatherproof housing lower down on the pole.
  • The R36 is a local access point that wirelessly repeats the desired signal to the house. In this way any wifi-enabled computer or tablet using any operating system can take advantage of the outdoor high-gain antenna. And, no software (driver or utility) need be installed on your computer or tablet.

Realtek 8187L chipset because they announced in late summer 2011 that they would discontinue further driver support for all new operating system versions.
Realtek is not willing to support future RT8187L driver updates for latest windows, mac and linux, but will continue to production of the chipset into the future.
Realtek 8187L chipset is an old model (though great one) dating back to 2006.  This chipset is the basis of Alfa AWUS036H authentic version.

Try these steps to narrow down the possible cause:
1. Try more than one device (try a USB mouse, for example, and at least one other USB device)
2. For USB extender or active USB cables:  Try using the auxiliary power supply
3.  Try more than 2 of the USB extender just in case 1 or 2 is defective
4.  Try more than one ethernet cable.  Try just a short Cat5e cable just to see if you can get it to work before moving on to longer lengths
Our sku of the USB extender is UE

George Hardesty

George Hardesty – Founder/Principal

Founded Data Alliance in Jan. 2002 as an integration services provider.

Data Alliance, 2002 to present:

  • Grew revenues at 20-25% annual compounded rate from 2002 to 2021
  • Designer, architect, and author of the data-alliance.net website, which is one of the leading websites for our niche markets.
  • One of the first Ubiquiti sales-channel partners:  2006 – present
  • Alfa’s first distributor: Jan 2007 – present. Alfa’s USB WiFi adapters were (and remain) the leading brand, and Data Alliance was their sole distributor in the Americas & Europe for several years, at a time when this was a staple consumer WiFi product.
  • Founded Data Alliance’s subsidiary company in Mexico in March 2008.

Education/background:

  • Indiana University
    • Business Economics & Public Policy
  • Technical certifications
    • Cisco (CCNA), Symantec enterprise security, Citrix (CCA)

Data Alliance: Other notes/history:

  • 2002 to 2004: Consultancy for four Internet Services Providers: Business-unit planning & development: Planning all of the equipment and financial models for data-center / hosting services, as well as wireless Internet access services. In the process of this, became involved in procuring all of the wireless equipment for one of these firms, which expanded into becoming the wholesale resource for a number of clients.
  • Data Alliance began as a network integrator in Jan. 2002, when George left his employer at the time (IntelliSuite Technologies) to join a small team of independent consultants in a project for Club 8 Company, a Danish firm which was expanding its operations in the US: George setup the LANs and WANs for Club8 stores and warehouses in/around New York and Phoenix.
  • Influenced manufacturers to implement RP-SMA jacks on WiFi USB adapters as a replacement for the fragile MC and MMCX connectors that were the only choices in 2004 to mid-2006.

Prior to Data Alliance:

1996 through Jan. 2002:  Sold technical solutions for Solix Systems and then IntelliSuite Technologies. George’s major-account sales made a transformative impact, resulting in millions of dollars in recurring revenue for both companies (detail below).  At IntelliSuite, George was promoted to Director of Sales, and played a central role in the transformation of that firm into a successful data-center/hosting services firm, hosting entire IT environments for many large and small companies. Left IntelliSuite in Jan. 2002 to begin consulting on a project for Club 8 Co. (described in first paragraph above).

Details of background before Data Alliance:

IntelliSuite Technologies – suburban Chicago (Schaumburg) Director of Sales – 1999 – 2002 Central role in transforming IntelliSuite from a garden-variety IT consulting-firm, to being a provider of fully-outsourced IT services, including hosting services for applications, data, and websites, as well as Internet services with managed security. These offerings together became the company’s core business. Company revenues tripled during tenure as Director of Sales, during a time that the dot.com bubble was bursting – the market in general was collapsing, for IT services. This growth was accomplished chiefly through sales generated in the new offerings described above. The company’s profit margins went from near zero when I started, to about 30% net profits on the higher revenues. Planned infrastructure for co-located datacenter; developed all cost and pricing models for hosting of outsourced IT environments for clients ranging from small businesses to Fortune 500. Planned and managed numerous network upgrades, implementations, and hosting projects Planned and managed a multimillion-dollar applications-hosting project using Citrix Assessed, planned and delivered remote access/WAN solutions Customer environment assessments including comprehensive Total Cost of Ownership analyses comparing various IT environment scenarios over a five-year period.

Solix Systems – Santa Clara, CA and suburban Chicago (Schaumburg) Account Manager / Project Manager – 1996 to 1999

Key Achievement:

Sold the first beta site-license of Solix’s web-based e-business application for procurement and expense management, with integration into a Baan ERP system. The customer was Sensormatic, a $1 billion firm at that time, with 1,500 end-users. It was Solix’s first sale of a software application that they had developed in-house, and this application became the basis of a whole suite of business software applications that is now Solix’s main line of business. Other sales, achievements, responsibilities, etc: * Sold and co-managed company’s first Baan software projects (systems integration, custom-development and Electronic Data Interchange) * Opened exclusive consulting relationships with large Baan users. * Sold Baan customization-team services to the second-largest Baan user. * Involved in market research & strategy development. Developed marketing materials. * Assisted in planning & management of systems integration projects.
